Brodnica's Care Crisis: 'Dwójka' Returns to Remote Learning

Renovation Delays in Brodnica: "Dwójka" Returns to Remote Learning

During the summer, the Brodnica City Hall implemented a comprehensive thermomodernization project for municipal educational facilities. The investment, worth over 20 million Polish złoty, was financed by the National Recovery Plan (KPO) and covered several key locations in the city.

However, the beginning of the 2026/2027 school year in Brodnica brought an unexpected organizational paralysis to one of the facilities. Despite ambitious plans, a crisis occurred at the School and Preschool Complex No. 2 at Kolejowa Street. Prolonged construction work inside the building forced the administration to immediately send students from grades II-VIII to remote learning.

Status of Thermomodernized Facilities

Summer renovations included several municipal facilities. Their status at the beginning of the school year is as follows:

  • School Complex No. 1 at Matejki Street (including Primary School No. 7): The thermomodernization works, covering didactic buildings and the sports hall, were extensive. However, the contractors managed to prepare the interiors so that students could safely and stationary begin learning from September 1st.
  • Preschool No. 8 at Zielona Street: This facility was also covered by the same EU grant. Thanks to good organization, a childcare crisis was avoided, and the facility operates without disruptions.
  • School and Preschool Complex No. 2 at Kolejowa Street: This is where critical complications arose. As officially informed by the administration, "extraordinary events related to the building's thermomodernization" occurred, creating a real threat to the health and safety of children. As a result, this school was the only one forced to urgently transfer students to e-learning.

Emergency Evacuation to Google Classroom: What are the Procedures?

The school principal issued an official communication for parents, implementing e-learning procedures for the days from September 2 to 4, 2026. Lessons will be conducted via the Google Classroom platform, and access codes for virtual classes are being sent by teachers through the electronic journal.

In the published instructions, the administration emphasizes key technical and logistical issues aimed at ensuring the smooth functioning of remote learning:

  • One Device Rule: Students logging in for the first time must be added to the class on one specific device, providing their full name and surname. This is to prevent access and identification problems.
  • Shortened Lessons: All classes begin according to schedule, but due to so-called digital hygiene, screen time for lessons has been shortened to 30 minutes. The remaining 15 minutes of the lesson unit are to be used by students for independent self-study, which aims to minimize eye strain and improve learning effectiveness.

What Deserves Special Attention? (Critical Analysis)

School on Installments – Decisions Every Friday

The situation at School and Preschool Complex No. 2 is dynamic and uncertain. The principal announced that every Friday, based on the progress of construction work, decisions for the following week will be made for individual classes. Parents have been forced to constantly monitor the school's Facebook page and messages in the electronic diary, which prevents them from planning their work time and childcare long-term.

Big Problem with the After-School Club

Although the school allows children from grades I-III enrolled in the after-school club to stay there before and after classes, it was simultaneously noted: it is not possible to conduct e-learning within the after-school club premises. This means that a student from grade II or III cannot bring a laptop to school and participate in online lessons there – the parent must still provide home care, which constitutes an additional logistical challenge.

Rescue Operation: Equipment Rental

The school has technical facilities and has launched an equipment support program. Parents who do not have computers for their children can borrow school laptops from the IT specialist (red building, 1st floor). This resource is based, among other things, on the 18 modern remote learning kits purchased by the city in July of this year, which provides significant support in a difficult situation.

Summary

The multi-million złoty modernization is ultimately intended to bring new quality, ecological heating, and LED lighting. For now, however, parents from Kolejowa Street are compiling Google account logins and passwords instead of school supplies, awaiting the crucial Friday announcement.
