A Crucial Stage for Brodnica's Future: Meeting on the Bypass Construction

Brodnica, March 17, 2026 – A strategic meeting dedicated to one of the most significant road investments in the region – the construction of the Brodnica bypass – took place at the Brodnica District Office. The investment covers the section from Warszawskie roundabout to Lidzbarska Street and is crucial for future development and traffic flow in the region.

Leading Participants of the Meeting

The event was hosted by Brodnica District Governor Arkadiusz Orłowski and Deputy District Governor Piotr Burkwicz. Key representatives from local governments and institutions involved in the investment's preparation participated in the discussions. These included Brodnica Mayor Jarosław Radacz, Deputy Mayor Krzysztof Hekert, Brodnica Commune Head Adam Zalewski, as well as Łukasz Kościelski – Director of the Road Infrastructure Department of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship Marshal's Office, and Przemysław Dąbrowski – Director of the Voivodeship Road Administration in Bydgoszcz. Member of Parliament Zbigniew Sosnowski was also present, emphasizing the importance of the undertaking.

Details of the Planned Investment

The planned bypass, over 3.6 km long, aims to connect the Warszawskie Roundabout with Lidzbarska Street. Its main purpose will be to divert heavy transit traffic from the city center towards regional road no. 544, leading towards Lidzbark. Regional road no. 544 is an important element of the regional communication system, connecting Brodnica district with the southern part of the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship and providing access to national roads no. 15 and S7. The investment also includes the expansion of the road system along the following streets: Nowa, Tulipanowa, 18 Stycznia, Matejki, Michałowska, and Litewska.

Work Progress and Schedule

The meeting focused on updating technical documentation and financial matters. As District Governor Arkadiusz Orłowski emphasized, the goal is to make the bypass available to residents as soon as possible. Przemysław Dąbrowski from the Voivodeship Road Administration in Bydgoszcz informed that the investment is at an advanced stage. It already has the decision on permission for road investment realization (ZRID), which opens the way for the commencement of works. The realistic start date for construction is the turn of 2026 and 2027. It is estimated that construction will take approximately two years, meaning drivers could use the new route as early as 2029, although much will depend on the tender procedure.

Inter-municipal Cooperation and Additional Actions

An essential aspect of the project is close cooperation between local governments. The City of Brodnica plans to simultaneously carry out a water supply investment alongside the bypass construction, which will help avoid future disruptions. Deputy Mayor Krzysztof Hekert stressed the need for coordination. Negotiations are also underway regarding the financial participation of individual local governments and the future management of road sections after the diversion of transit traffic.

Challenges and Strategic Importance of the Investment

Member of Parliament Zbigniew Sosnowski pointed out the complexity of the investment preparation process, listing demolitions, appeal procedures, and coordination with existing technical infrastructure as major challenges. Volatile market conditions and fluctuations in building material prices may also affect the pace of implementation. Despite these difficulties, all meeting participants agreed that the bypass's construction is crucial for improving safety and traffic flow in Brodnica, as well as for the further development of the city and the entire district. This investment will significantly relieve the city center, improve residents' quality of life, and increase the region's economic attractiveness.
