Police Launch National Campaign "Archiwum X – We Never Stop Searching!"

The National Police Headquarters has launched a nationwide campaign titled "Archiwum X – We Never Stop Searching!". The initiative, carried out by the KGP Criminal Bureau in cooperation with the KGP Social Communication Bureau during the Week of Assistance for Victims of Crime, aims to highlight unresolved murder cases from years past. It emphasizes that behind every such case lie human tragedies, and new technologies coupled with witness testimonies can help solve them.

Archiwum X: Human Stories and New Possibilities

The work of police officers from the so-called Archiwum X (Cold Case Unit) is much more than just re-analyzing files. It is primarily an attempt to reconstruct victims' stories, understand events from years ago, and provide answers to families who have lived in uncertainty for decades. Thanks to the dynamic development of technology, such as advanced DNA testing and modern forensic analysis, it is possible to re-examine evidence and discover new leads.

However, a crucial role in solving many mysteries is also played by human memory and the willingness to share information. Insp. Dr. Michał Białęcki, Director of the KGP Criminal Bureau, emphasizes: "Human memory is fleeting, and time works against us. […] Sometimes, however, a small impulse, a stimulus, is enough to bring them back to life."

Public Cooperation is Key to the Truth

The main goal of the campaign is to encourage witnesses and individuals with any knowledge of past criminal events to contact the Police. Even seemingly insignificant details can prove to be a breakthrough. The Spokesperson for the Chief of Police, Insp. Katarzyna Nowak, adds: "Our campaign also aims to show that the passage of time does not close the path to justice, and new analytical capabilities, the experience of police officers, and information provided by witnesses can bring the long-awaited breakthrough in an investigation." The campaign also highlights the importance of empathy and social responsibility.

Highlighted Cases and Historical Successes

As part of the initiative, three unsolved cases, on which Archiwum X officers are still working, will be brought back to public attention. Materials in the form of short films and publications aim to re-appeal for contact from individuals who may remember the circumstances related to these events. The campaign also refers to examples of cases that have been successfully resolved after many years, demonstrating the effectiveness and determination of police officers.

Evolution of Archiwum X in the Polish Police

The first Archiwum X unit in Poland was established in 1999 at the Provincial Police Headquarters in Krakow. Its successes demonstrated the potential of re-analyzing old cases using new techniques. Technological advancements in forensics (e.g., DNA testing) spurred the creation of subsequent units. On May 15, 2023, the Central Archiwum X – the Department of Unsolved Crimes of the National Police Headquarters Criminal Bureau – was established, coordinating activities nationwide and handling the most serious cases.
