Brodnica celebrates the 106th anniversary of its return to Poland

106 years ago Brodnica returned to Poland!

Exactly on January 18, 1920, Brodnica became part of the reborn Poland again. Before that happened, the German troops left the city. The last tattoo took place on the Main Market Square, where the Grenzschutz units gathered around the monument to those who died in the Franco-Prussian War. The Prussian eagle was solemnly removed and transferred to the barracks.

Welcome to the Polish Army

On January 18, 1920, troops of the Polish Army commanded by General Stanisław Pruszyński entered Brodnica. In the Main Market Square, Augustyn Gapa, the then mayor, and Starosta Władysław Olszewski welcomed the soldiers with bread and salt. After years of partitions, Polish life was reviving on the Drwęca River.

Remembering liberation and difficult years

January is also a time to commemorate the liberation of Brodnica from Nazi occupation in 1945 by Soviet troops. Unfortunately, after the entry of the Red Army, the city experienced destruction, looting, arrests and deportations. Many residents never returned home, and dreams of a free Poland were shattered.
