Brodnica's Burial Sites: History and Remembrance

With the upcoming All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, it's worth remembering the burial sites in Brodnica and the Brodnica district. These often-forgotten cemeteries hold the remains of people who dedicated their lives for the good of the region, the country, and future generations.

Historical Publications about Brodnica's Necropolises

The necropolises of Brodnica and the surrounding areas have been described in numerous publications. Alfons and Mariusz Maliccy in "Brodnica Sketches" (1993) and Jerzy Wultański in "Brodnica's Necropolises" (2001) dedicated much attention to them. It's also worth mentioning the information on the News page of the Brodnica County Starosty.

Forgotten Cemeteries of Brodnica

The oldest cemetery in Brodnica was located around the parish church. Other historical burial sites include the Evangelical cemetery at ul. św. Jakuba, the areas near the St. George's chapel (the intersection of Mostowa, Mazurska, and Paderewskiego streets), and the Holy Spirit chapel on Kamionka Street.

Jewish Cemetery and Other Locations

On the southern outskirts of Brodnica, on the road to Rypin, there was a Jewish cemetery, on the site of which a furniture factory was later built. Near the road to Toruń, there were two adjacent cemeteries: Catholic (at ul. Sądowa, established in the 19th century) and Evangelical (operated from 1798-1956, now a park with an obelisk). A third Evangelical cemetery was located on Karbowska Street.

Important Places of Remembrance

Of particular importance is the military cemetery in Lasku Miejskim, where soldiers who fell in the Polish-Bolshevik War in 1920 are buried. The youngest communal cemetery is located at ul. Targowa, where burials have been taking place since 1997.

Sources of Knowledge about Old Cemeteries

Information about forgotten cemeteries can be found in publications and in the Lapidaria Wikidot online database (http://lapidaria.wikidot.com/brodnicki), presenting the former necropolises of Pomerania and Kuyavia, including those from the Brodnica district.

Let's Remember the Resting Places

Let's remember the places where our loved ones and those who deserved the memory of future generations rest.
