Honoring the Memory of John Paul II in Brodnica

Today, October 16, 2025, we celebrate the 47th anniversary of the election of Karol Wojtyła as Pope. This was a historic moment, as after 455 years, a Pope from outside Italy ascended to the Throne of Peter.

Local Celebrations

As every year, representatives of the city and Brodnica County authorities gathered in front of the John Paul II monument in Brodnica to honor his memory. Brodnica Starost Paweł Szramka and Deputy Starost Arkadiusz Orłowski laid flowers on behalf of the residents of the county, paying homage to this great Pole.

About the Pontificate of John Paul II

Cardinal Karol Wojtyła was elected Pope on October 16, 1978, and took the name John Paul II. His pontificate lasted nearly 26 and a half years (1978-2005) and was the third longest in the history of the Catholic Church.

Day of Pope John Paul II

The Sejm of the Republic of Poland established October 16 as the Day of Pope John Paul II to honor his authority and teachings on solidarity, courage, humility, determination, and wisdom.

Places of Remembrance in Brodnica and the County

In Brodnica and the Brodnica County, there are many places commemorating John Paul II, including a street and a park in Brodnica, and schools in Brodnica and Bobrowo. The John Paul II monument in Brodnica, the work of Robert Sobociński, an artist from Poznań, was unveiled on June 8, 2008, during the celebrations of the 710th anniversary of Brodnica.
