47th Anniversary of the Election of the Polish Pope

On October 16, 1978, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, Archbishop of Krakow, accomplished a historic feat. He was elected Pope, taking the name John Paul II. He was the first Pole and the first Bishop of Rome from outside Italy in over four and a half centuries.

To mark the 47th anniversary of this unique event, representatives of Brodnica honored the memory of the Pope. Krzysztof Hekert, Deputy Mayor, and Artur Dombrowski, Chairman of the City Council, laid flowers at the monument of John Paul II on behalf of all the city's residents.

In Poland, this anniversary is celebrated as an official holiday - John Paul II Day. Established by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland on July 27, 2005, it aims to pay tribute to the authority of the 20th century, who, drawing on Christian values, taught us solidarity, courage, and humility.
